What is a teaching kitchen?
A teaching kitchen is a kitchen specially designed for training purposes. Unlike a standard kitchen, a teaching kitchen is tailored to groups of students who are learning to cook under the supervision of a teacher.
Such a kitchen primarily offers sufficient space for group work, safe workstations with professional appliances and a realistic learning environment that prepares students for the workplace.
Whether it’s enthusiasts taking their first steps in the hospitality industry or students on a specialised chef training course, a well-designed teaching kitchen makes learning not only safer, but also more efficient and inspiring.

Where are teaching kitchens used?
Wherever learning, practising or cooking together is the focus, a teaching kitchen can make all the difference. A well-equipped teaching kitchen creates a safe, professional environment where people can develop their cooking skills whilst having fun.
1. Cooking classes for schools
The best-known application is, of course, in education. Secondary schools, colleges and chef training programmes use teaching kitchens to enable students to learn through practical experience. A modern school kitchen prepares them for the job market and makes training programmes more attractive.

2. Cooking classes for care homes
In residential care homes and day centres, teaching kitchens are used as an activity or form of therapy. Residents or clients cook there in a safe environment, which is not only beneficial but also encourages social interaction.

3. Teaching kitchens for cookery classes and workshops
More and more cooking studios and clubs are opting for a professional teaching kitchen to organise workshops or group activities. This allows both amateur cooks and beginners to cook in a comfortable environment.

4. Cooking classes for local authorities and community centres
Local authorities and community centres also make use of school kitchens, for example for cookery classes on healthy eating or integration projects. In this way, the kitchen becomes a place where learning and socialising come together.

Why would my school/organisation need a teaching kitchen?
More and more schools and training centres are investing in a modern training kitchen. This is no coincidence, as the benefits are considerable:
- Practical learning: students apply the theory straight away in a realistic environment.
- Preparation for the job market: a teaching kitchen simulates the working conditions of the hospitality or care sectors.
- Safe and supervised: students can practise independently, but always under supervision and in accordance with the relevant safety standards.
- Attractiveness of the course: a well-equipped school kitchen attracts more students and enhances the quality of the course.
A teaching kitchen is therefore not only an investment in infrastructure, but also in the future of students and the reputation of the school or course.
What should I bear in mind when designing a teaching kitchen?
A teaching kitchen requires a different approach to a traditional commercial kitchen. As several students are cooking at the same time, a smart layout is essential. Sufficient workstations, a clear view for the teacher and safe circulation routes.
The equipment also deserves special attention. School kitchens are subject to intensive use, often by novice cooks. Robust, user-friendly appliances ensure the kitchen will last for years. Safety and hygiene are crucial in this regard – from good ventilation to materials that are easy to clean.
At DL Concepts, we place particular emphasis on low-maintenance solutions. This ensures that the educational kitchen not only looks good but also continues to function efficiently.
How much does a cookery class cost?
The price of a teaching kitchen depends on various factors: the size of the space, the number of workstations, the chosen equipment and the desired finish. As every school and course has different needs, we always provide bespoke solutions.
That said, we can assure you that investing in quality and low-maintenance materials pays off in the long run. A sustainable school kitchen requires less maintenance and lasts longer. Curious about the options? Feel free to get in touch with us – we’d be delighted to help!
This is how AP University of Applied Sciences acquired a bespoke professional teaching kitchen
A fine example is the collaboration with AP Campus Hallen Antwerp. There, an old abattoir was converted into a state-of-the-art campus. DL Concepts not only fitted out the student canteen, but also a completely new teaching kitchen.
This kitchen consists of ten separate workstations, each fitted with an extractor hood with a heat recovery system. Everything was custom-designed and manufactured by DL Concepts, in combination with both professional and domestic appliances from our regular partners. As a result, the Nutrition programme now has a practical training area where students can cook and learn safely, efficiently and without any worries.
The result? A low-maintenance and future-proof teaching kitchen where dozens of students gain practical experience every day in an environment that perfectly complements their course.
