Sustainable food waste management with a professional compost bin

A professional composting unit in your commercial kitchen is the best way to operate more sustainably and reduce organic waste.

Making good use of organic kitchen waste

In a commercial kitchen, a great many meals are served day in, day out. Naturally, food preparation generates a significant amount of waste. This includes both packaging waste and organic waste, both of which must be processed correctly. It would be a shame to simply throw organic waste in the bin when you could compost it instead. In a professional commercial kitchen, this is best done using a professional composting unit.

How does a compost bin work?

In nature, composting organic waste takes months, but with a compost bin you can speed up this process. Simply put fruit and vegetable waste and leftover food scraps into the compost bin, and the heat generated inside ensures that the waste takes just 24 hours to be transformed into soil improver. The combination of microbes from different types of waste also speeds up the composting process. Before you know it, you’ll have the ideal material for fertilising plants.

A professional compost bin therefore offers all sorts of benefits:

  • Less waste, as organic waste is transformed into compost
  • Lower CO₂ emissions from your professional commercial kitchen
  • A sustainable solution as it contributes to ‘zero waste’ targets
  • ‘Free’ fertiliser for plants and shrubs

What should you look out for when choosing a compost bin?

D&L Concepts has previously installed composting units in a number of professional catering facilities. We are happy to advise you on the best choice of composting machine for your commercial kitchen. In doing so, we take into account the machine’s capacity, the level of automation and the system on which the composting machine operates. After all, some composting units operate using heat, whilst others use oxygen for composting. We also provide advice on where to position the unit within the commercial kitchen, with a view to ensuring a practical layout.

Furthermore, it is important that your commercial kitchen staff are willing to use the composting unit correctly. After all, kitchen staff must be fully aware of which waste can be composted and which cannot. Everything from fruit and vegetable waste, coffee grounds or other organic material may be put into the composting machine. Items such as plastic, metal or other non-biodegradable materials must be strictly avoided in the composter.

Take a look at our projects

In this project, the provincial authorities were looking for a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for small amounts of kitchen waste. To ensure this ran smoothly, we installed a compost bin that composts up to 10 kg of organic waste every day.

Would you like to compost organic waste yourself in your commercial kitchen?

By integrating a professional composting unit into your commercial kitchen, you can not only have a positive impact on the environment and on your own ‘zero waste’ policy, but it also boosts operational efficiency in the kitchen. Want to find out more about the options?
